Volunteers

The Education Act, 1995 puts students under the care and control of the board of education (board). There is an expectation that the school will ensure that people caring for the children are appropriately screened. Therefore, the school can collect potential volunteers’ necessary personal information to confirm that board policy requirements are being met. If a volunteer does not wish to provide this information, the volunteer should not be permitted to participate.

It is recommended that all volunteers be required to have a criminal records check. References can also be requested.

Records containing personal information of volunteers are subject to LAFOIP. All personal information collected must be used only for the purposes for which it was collected. The school division must collect, store, and destroy, the information according to its records management guidelines. This includes the need to hold the information in confidence in a secure location with access only by those with a need to know.
